Hozier admits: 'I'm avoiding happiness at all costs so it doesn't effect my song writing'

Hozier has admitted he doesn’t want to get too happy with his success – because it might effect his songwriting.

The crooner revealed he might have to “avoid happiness” to make sure he still turns out songs his fans will love.

“Of course, the great fear is getting too happy and never being able to write another song. I suppose I’ll just avoid happiness at all costs and then I’ll still have material to work from,” he said.

While the Bray singer has enjoyed the worldwide success he has achieved since Take Me To Church became a global hit – he’s not letting himself enjoy it too much.

“Good news hits you – it can take a while to sink in. ‘I’ve been nominated for a Grammy? Great!'” he said.

“You have to allow yourself a moment to enjoy it, but it’s not good to pat yourself on the back when everyone else is doing that.”

Humble: Hozier doesn’t let success go to his head

New songs aren’t coming easy to Hozier at the minute with his busy touring schedule and what the 25-year-old does write is quite different from his usual style.

However, the Wicklow star is planning some side projects where he can release music under different names.

“The longer you’ve been away from making music, [the more] you’re bursting to make something new, to get some tracks down,” he told The Independent.

“That’s a great feeling, to know that you still might have something up your sleeve, that you haven’t already used up your best ideas.”
