Love/Hate star Kelly Thornton: 'My mum told me I got new movie role'

Teen actress Kelly Thornton has revealed it was her mother who told her she had won a role in John Carney’s upcoming film Sing Street starring  fellow Irish stars Aidan Gillen and Jack Reynor.

The former Love/Hate star’s career is being managed by her mother Maria, however Maria has insisted she is nothing like other famous stage parents like Kris Jenner.

“I couldn’t believe I got Sing Street to be honest, I was just so happy. My mam told me, she got the call. She’s my manager,” Kelly told Goss.ie.

“As long as I’m not Miley Cyrus’ mother, it’ll be ok. I hate that word momager. Basically I just drag her out of bed and get her to places so people can call me what they like,” Maria added.

Kelly’s new role in Sing Street is her first big feature film following a role in indie film Life’s A Breeze in 2013 and the 17-year-old actress admitted she still gets a little nervous going on auditions.

“Yeah I do love going on auditions. Sometimes you send in a tape if its overseas but when there’s an audition in Ireland it’s a bit more personal, you get to go into a room and meet people.”

“I get a little bit nervous but you do have to have some kind of confidence going in that will get somewhere, you know you’ve done your best then.”

Meanwhile, Kelly’s work schedule is going to be getting much busier this year with several more projects planned for later in the year.

“I’m going to be in Clean Break, an RTE drama at the end of the year and then a short film called Battle as well. I’d love to keep doing this if I’m lucky,” she told Goss.ie.
