James Cameron says Avatar 2 WON’T be coming out next year

Avatar fans will be disappointed to hear that the sequel has been delayed once again.

Director James Cameron confirmed that the Christmas 2018 release date has been pushed back, and he doesn’t currently know when the film – originally scheduled for a 2016 release – is likely to be hitting cinemas.

“Well, 2018 is not happening,” he told the Toronto Star. “We haven’t announced a firm release date. What people have to understand is that this is a cadence of releases.

“So we’re not making Avatar 2. We’re making Avatar 2, 3, 4 and 5. It’s an epic undertaking. It’s not unlike building the Three Gorges dam.”

The third, fourth and fifth movies in the franchise were set for 2020, 2022 and 2023 release dates, but are also likely to be pushed back as a result.

However James explained that the delay is simply because of all the production that goes into making the fantasy films.

“So I know where I’m going to be for the next eight years of my life,” he said. “It’s not an unreasonable time frame if you think about it. It took us four-and-a-half years to make one movie and now we’re making four. We’re full tilt boogie right now. This is my day job and pretty soon we’ll be 24-7.

“We’re pretty well designed on all our creatures and sets. It’s pretty exciting stuff. I wish I could share with the world. But we have to preserve a certain amount of showmanship and we’re going to draw that curtain when the time is right.”

Avatar came out in 2009 and garnered $2.8billion at the box office. The sequel will see Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana reprising their roles, with Sigourney Weaver returning to the franchise as a new character.
