Here are the many benefits of rice water – and how you can make it at home

Rice water is the starchy water that’s left behind after soaking or boiling it.

It’s thought to contain a plethora of all-encompassing, beneficial vitamins and minerals – including B vitamins, vitamin E, antioxidants and amino acids.

Some of the benefits of rice water for your skin are soothing sensitivity, brightening, anti-ageing and minimising pores.

Rice water is also incredible beneficial for your hair, and can make it smoother and shinier, while also strengthening, detangling and aiding in hair growth.

How to make rice water:

1. Soaking

  • Rinse 1/2 cup of uncooked rice thoroughly and place in a bowl with 2-3 cups of water.
  • Leave it to soak for 30 minutes before straining the water into a clean bowl.

2. Boiling

  • Use 1/2 cup of rice to double the water.
  • Cook the rice and strain the water into a clean bowl.

There are a number of different ways you can use your rice water once you’ve made it.

  • You can use rice water as a typical hair mask/treatment by wetting your hair with it, especially the scalp, and massaging it for five minutes.
  • You can use rice water to detangle your hair if you transfer it into a spray bottle.
  • Use the rice water as a face mist.
