Let the battle begin! Brooklyn and Room up for Best Picture at the Oscar

It’s a great day for Irish film as two Irish flicks, Room and Brooklyn have been recognised for the Best Picture award at the Oscars.

Both Lenny Abrahamson and John Crowley films will also battle it out in the Best adapted screenplay category this February.

However, the Irish movies do face tough competition in the Best Picture category against The Big Short, Bridge of Spies, Mad Max: Fury Road, The Martian, Spotlight and The Revenant starring Domhnall Gleeson.

Lenny Abrahamson’s Room leads the charge for Irish Oscar film nominations with four – Best picture, Best adapted screenplay, Best director and Best actress in a leading role.

While John Crowley’s Brooklyn isn’t far behind with three honours including Best picture, Best adapted screenplay for Nick Hornby and Best actress in a leading role, Saoirse Ronan.

Four of Domhnall Gleeson’s films have also been nominated at this year’s academy awards; Brooklyn, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Ex-Machina for Best original screenplay and The Revenant, which leads the noms with 12.
