Tom Vaughan-Lawlor is back to a life of crime for his new film role.

The actor is best known for his role as Nidge on Love/Hate is set to begin filming a new movie about a prison escape this week.

Maze tells the story of how 38 republican inmates fled the high-security Antrim jail in 1983.

Movie: Tom begins shooting Maze this week

At the time, the prison was the most secure in all of Europe and it was the biggest mass breakout since World War 11.

Tom portrays IRA member Larry Marley who hatched a plan to embarrass then British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, however he did not take part in the breakout.

Following the breakout, fifteen inmates were recaptured on the day, four others were caught within two days and nineteen remained at large.

The film is set to focus on the period between the 1981 hunger strike and the escape.

The flick begins shooting this week in a Cork prison before heading onto Sweden next month.

”Prison escape films are always a big draw. You only have to think of The Shawshank Redemption and Cool Hand Luke,” producer Jane Dolan told the Sunday Times.

”This is one of the biggest prison breakouts after the Second World War and it was the most secure prison at the time in Europe.”

”The thirty-eight prisons got on the back of a food lorry so it’s a pretty remarkable escape story.”
