Jim Sheridan admits: 'Saoirse's performance isn't showy enough to win the Oscar'

Jim Sheridan has admitted that he doesn’t think Saoirse Ronan will win an Oscar.

The Irish actress has been nominated for dozens of awards for her performance in Brooklyn, however the film director reckons she isn’t “showy” enough for the Oscars.

“The movie Saoirse is in is a beautiful tone poem, an original book beautifully written and the adaptation is superb,” he said.

Oscars: Jim doesn’t think Saoirse will win the Academy Award

“It’s not the type of showy performance that usually the Academy reward,” he told the Irish Mirror.

“Professionals within the business know how difficult it is to keep that even keel and keep the audience interested. It’s a genius performance.”

The My Left Foot director said he believes Saoirse will face still competition from Room star Brie Larson who beat out the Carlow actress at the Golden Globes.

“Probably, Brie Larson is in a more dramatic role.”

Meanwhile, Jim revealed that he thinks there should be an Irish streaming service to rival Netflix.

“Right now the film board have a huge chance to take a big slice of the international market, awards, etc.”

“I just wish we could do the same with streaming. I don’t understand why Netflix and all these streaming sites can come into Ireland and we haven’t a service in America,” he said.

“It’s just beyond my comprehension that you can have RTE trying to charge whatever they do for their licence fee and yet you can get Netflix for a quarter of that.”
