It's About Time! 11 Reasons Saoirse Ronan Deserves To Win An Oscar

With a huge amount of Irish nominations at The Oscars this year, Saoirse Ronan is one of our most treasured stars, and everyone is rooting for her.

The Oscars are the final awards show to take place where the biggest actors in the world will congregate in Los Angeles to be in with a chance of winning the film industry’s highest honour.

She’s won rave reviews for her performance as Eilis Lacey in Brooklyn and we’ve compiled a list of reasons why then Carlow actress deserves an Oscar.

1. She’s been nominated before

Film buffs out there will remember that Saoirse was nominated for an Academy Award before.

The Brooklyn star was up for Best Supporting Actress in 2007 for her role as the young Briony in Atonement which she filmed at the tender age of 12.

Saoirse deserves another shot at glory, and we think Brooklyn is just the movie that can do it.

2. Her performance has won rave reviews

Film critics are notoriously hard to please, but almost all of them have praised Brooklyn as one of the best films of the year.

The flick was nominated for dozens of awards including the Golden Globes and the Screen Actors Guild Awards.

Saoirse’s performance in particular has been cited as exceptional and we reckon the Academy will think so too.

3. Ryan Gosling loves her

As one of the most popular actors in the world, people not only fancy the pants off him, but value him as one of the best in the industry.

The actor cast Saoirse in his movie Lost River and the pair have been heaping praise on each other ever since.

Ryan even taught Americans how to pronounce her name, famously explaining that it is, ‘Saoirse, like inertia.’

4. She’s already up for a Golden Globe

While the Globes are an award show all to themselves – they are inevitably always compared to the Oscars.

It’s common knowledge at this point that many of the winners from the Globes go on to receive nods from the Academy.

Saoirse is up for Best Actress in a Drama this year so we hope it spells good luck for her chances at the Oscars.

5. People will finally learn how to pronounce her name

Irish names are notoriously difficult for foreigners to pronounce and we don’t blame them.

The spelling is often completely different to the pronunciation and nobody knows that better than Denis Quaid who butchered Saoirse’s name by called her ‘Sheesha’.

She’s been in the public eye for years now, so it’s about time people knew how to say her name.

6. She loves to promote Irish brands

Being a famous actor comes with many perks and one of them is having a huge platform to publicise pretty much anything!

During a recent appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Saoirse took the opportunity to give a shout out to her favourite nail salon, Tropical Popical.

The Carlow native mentioned them so many times, Ellen couldn’t resist but popping up a vine on her Twitter page to summarize the interview.

7. She was named as one of Forbes Top 30 Under 30

Forbes Top 30 Under 30 celebrates the best and brightest in the under 30 set from entrepreneurs to exceptionally talented individuals.

Saoirse made the list this year for setting “critics fluttering” with her performance in Brooklyn.

We couldn’t agree more, Forbes.

8. An Irish lady needs to win

The last Irish actress that picked up an Academy Award was Brenda Fricker in 1989.

The Dubliner won the gong for Best Supporting Actress for My Left Foot and since then the only Irish actor to have won was Daniel Day Lewis (who is half English).

It’s time for the Irish to make a comeback at the 2016 ceremony and who better than Saoirse to take home the gold statue.

9. Despite living all over the world, she hasn’t lost her Irish accent

A quick glance at her CV will tell you that Saoirse makes moves pretty much every year and most of these are not filmed in Ireland.

The actress spends lots of time outside of the country but watch any interview with her and you’ll see her accent is as thick as ever.

Although she was raised in Carlow, Saoirse’s family comes from the big smoke and she speaks with a thick Dublin twang.

10. Saoirse lends her support to numerous charities

She’s supported charities including the Blue Cross and late last year was one of many Irish celebrities to attend the ISPCC’s annual luncheon.

Despite jetting across the world for filming, auditions and more, Saoirse always makes time for causes close to her heart.

The 21-year-old was also one of many famous faces who was very vocal in their support for last year’s marriage equality referendum.

11. She’s just sound

If there was an award for soundness, then Saoirse would get it, so why not hand her the Oscar instead?

Saoirse is definitely one of Ireland’s most down to earth stars.

Goss.ie has interviewed the actress quite a few times and she’s always been nothing but gracious and friendly.

If there’s anyone whose success is well deserved, it’s her.
