Kerry Katona revealed that her mother Sue gave her speed under the pretense it was sherbert when the former Atomic Kitten star was only 14!.
The Daily Mail reported from a talk the former pop star gave at The Hygrove, a new drug treatment centre that Kerry was on hand to unveil.
She openly discussed her addictions and how they changed the trajectory of her life at the opening in Gloucester but doesn’t blame her mother for the addiction battle she fought.
Her first experience of drugs, which led to addiction, occurred on a visit to her mum while she was in foster care.
The talk was broadcast live on Instagram and Kerry said, “I know my mum’s watching. I’m very proud of my mum and who she is today but my addition started back when I was 14. I was in a foster home and I was only allowed to see my mum via supervised visits.”
“I’m the only child. I went down to the pub on a Sunday, as one does from being up North, and I remember my mum going to the pub, she was with a woman at the time. My mum became a brief lesbian.”
She continued, “And I walked into the toilet, I was 14, and she had this bag of white powder. I said: “Mum, what’s that?” She said: “It’s sherbet” before signalling that her mother dipped her finger in the bag and put it into Kerry’s mouth.”
“I went home to my foster parents and I must have been awake for 24 hours… it was speed. For me that was normality. Every weekend we’d go out… and this is not me blaming my mum or me saying: “My mum’s a bad mum.””
“My mum did not know any different. Nor did I and, as I got older and older, it went from doing speed and then I met a boy and he introduced me to cocaine, I must have been about 15, 16.”
The star remarked on how she struggled growing up, “I was a really, really good kid but when I became an adult it just kind of went downhill from there, really.”
The 37-year-old married former Westlife star Brian McFadden in 2002 but split two years later.
They maintain a good relationship as they share two daughters, Lily-Sue and Molly Marie McFadden.
