Mariah Carey has revealed that she has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder.
The singer spoke to PEOPLE about her diagnosis and how she is dealing with it.
“I didn’t want to believe it until recently I lived in denial and isolation and in constant fear someone would expose me.
“It was too heavy a burden to carry and I simply couldn’t do that anymore. I sought and received treatment,” Mariah said.
Mariah also opened up about her medication, “I’m actually taking medication that seems to be pretty good. It’s not making me feel too tired or sluggish or anything like that. Finding the proper balance is what is most important.”
The singer feared she suffered from a sleep disorder after she experienced sleepless nights and having low energy.
“It turns out that I was experiencing a form of mania, I guess my depressive episodes were characterised by having very low energy. I would feel so lonely and sad.”
Reports of Mariah undergoing psychiatric treatment in hospital after a nervous breakdown and a suspected suicide attempt in 2001 were denied at the time by her publicist, however PEOPLE have since claimed that it was in fact true.
According to reports, the singer left two despondent and incoherent messages on her official website just before she was admitted to hospital.
Mariah complained of “being overworked and getting too little attention from her new record label”.
The singer shares twin children with ex husband Nick Cannon, Moroccan and Monroe.
