Irish filmmakers invited to join the Academy

Irish filmmakers Lenny Abrahamson and John Crowley, as well as author Emma Donoghue have been invited to become members of the Academy.

The stars will join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which now boasts 6,000 plus members, and be entitled to vote for Oscar nominees every year.

Both Lenny Abrahamson and Emma Donoghue were nominated for an Oscar this year for the critically-acclaimed film Room, while John Crowley’s film Brooklyn joined Room in the Best Picture category.

This isn’t the first time a number of Irish stars have been invited to join the Academy, as the likes of Michael Fassbender, Saoirse Ronan, Cillian Murphy and Bono are all standing members.

Other 2016 members include Alicia Vikander, Brie Larson, O’Shea ‘Ice Cube’ Jackson, Idris Elba, Tom Hiddleston and Emma Watson.
