The Eurovision 2016 theme has been announced

The theme for this year’s Eurovision has been announced, and it could strike a cord with the whole continent.

The singing contest is known for being quite political with singers regularly choosing to sing about issues in their countries, and this year’s theme is set to shine a light on Europe’s current refugee crisis.

The theme Come Together will focus on the situation, and hopefully encourage the people of Europe to unite together.

Irish pride: Nicky Byrne will represent Ireland this year | VIPIRELAND.COM

“It is more necessary than ever before that we unite and join together, and that is literally what we do in Eurovision, where most of the countries in Europe meet together,” last year’s winner MÃ¥ns Zelmerlöw told Sweden’s SVT.

“We obviously want to touch upon it: anything else would be to bury your head in the sand.”

The Eurovision winner commented on the issue following Sweden recently announcing plans to deport 80,000 asylum seekers.

Star: Nicky will perform his song Sunlight

“We have shut the borders now, I don’t know if there’s that much to be proud about,” he admitted.

Despite recent events, the Swedish Eurovision team will perform a dance highlighting the issue which will also give viewers “something to reflect upon”.

Our very own Nicky Byrne will be representing Ireland this year with his own song Sunlight, and the semi-finals will take place on May 10 and 12, with the final taking place on May 14.
