Oliver Callan cautioned by RTE after attending 'Yes' vote event

Comedian Oliver Callan has been cautioned by his employer, RTE after attending yesterday’s ‘Yes’ campaign rally.

Breaching RTE guidelines on the marriage referendum by speaking at a Noble Call for Equality at the Abbey Theatre, the TV star has been warned over publicly giving his support to the campaign.

“RTE has spoken with Oliver Callan and he understands RTE’s position on the referendum guidelines,” a statement from the station read.

“Oliver has assured RTE that he won’t be making any further public comments during the referendum campaign”.

Meanwhile, speaking at the event The Callan’s Kick star revealed he felt he wouldn’t be able to “forgive” himself if he didn’t do anything.

“This is the one moment that I just wouldn’t forgive myself if I didn’t do anything and it turned out to be a ‘No’ vote,” he admitted to the Herald.

“I’m not allowed to do a lot of things, but I continue to do them anyway in spite of my job.

“RTE were good enough to give me a platform to come out, so I don’t think it will be raising many eyebrows,” he added.

Oliver’s gag comes after fellow TV star Aoibhinn Ni Shuilleabhian, who presents RTE’s Science Squad, revealed she has “more freedom” over her opinions on marriage equality than other employees in RTE.

“I think its quite valid that they are represented equally, I’m not am employer of RTE – I work as a Freelance presenter and I always have so I may a little bit more freedom in that,” she told Goss.ie.
