Kate Garraway’s husband Derek Draper in tears as he wakes from coma in emotional clip

The emotional moment Derek Draper awoke from his coma will air in Kate Garraway’s upcoming documentary.

Finding Derek is set to air tonight on ITV at 9pm, documenting the 53-year-old’s heartbreaking health battle.

The former lobbyist has been in hospital since last March after contracting Covid-19, but sadly he remains seriously ill.

Derek’s wife Kate spoke ahead of the documentary’s release on Good Morning Britain this morning, where she shared a clip of the moment her husband woke up from his coma, bursting into tears.

In the clip, Kate exclaimed: “He’s back! We’ve been waiting a long time to speak to you. I’m so proud of you, so proud. You are so brilliant and every day you’re getting closer to coming home and being with the kids.”

Speaking on GMB, the presenter revealed it was important for her to remain positive for the sake of her husband.

She said: “The footage you see was recorded by my personally. After six months we got an iPad into the hospital so I could talk to him while he was in the coma. It was all I could do not to fall apart, and give him a positive energy, not a sad energy.”

Kate also shut down rumours she would be stepping down from her job to take care of her husband, saying: “You can’t get rid of me that easily! I’m not going anywhere.”

“I don’t think I ever really saw it as giving up work. I saw it was, ‘Right, I’m going to have to rethink my future.’ This is what anyone who is facing a long-term, impacted illness is going through and that’s going to mean altering my life… To be honest, being here has kept me sane.”
