Kate Garraway in ‘survival mode’ as she faces huge debt in wake of her late husband’s passing

Kate Garraway has admitted she’s in “survival mode” following the passing of her late husband, Derek Draper.

The Good Morning Britain presenter is facing up to £800,000 in debt, which accumulated because of the care Derek received.

Her beloved husband died at the age of 56 back in January, following a long battle with Covid-19.

Speaking to The Times, Kate said: “Derek’s needs were clearly so great, yet he didn’t warrant funded care — so you think, ‘If he isn’t getting it, then who is?'”

“To be fair to them, no one’s contacted me since he’s passed away to ask for that. They may well still do, but they haven’t as yet.”

“The bigger picture of the further appeals I haven’t addressed yet, because I’m still in survival mode. It’s supposed to be a system that’s meant to catch you if you fall. But actually, it feels like it’s trying to catch you out.”

Derek’s final moments before his passing will reportedly be shown in a new ITV  documentary, Kate Garraway: Derek’s Story.

The documentary will also capture him talking to the camera for the first time about his illness, despite it having left him with limited speech.

According to The Sun, he really “wanted to have his say” after he suffered from Covid-19 for four years.

The touching film, which will air on Tuesday at 9pm, will feature emotional and touching moments between the father of two and his family.

Speaking on Good Morning Britain, Kate admitted she “can’t quite believe” that Derek isn’t with here to “watch his story”.

She continued: “It’s been pretty emotional actually. Makes you want to jump in the screen and give him a hug.”

“You can’t quite believe that he’s not with us to watch his story. But, hopefully, it will be very useful for others who that are going through the same thing. That’s the dream and the wish.”

The mother-of-two explained that it was her husband’s wish to make the documentary, in a bid to help others who are also suffering with a long-term illness.
