Kate Garraway breaks down in tears in heartbreaking trailer for documentary on husband Derek

A new trailer for the documentary on Derek Draper’s illness has been released, which shows his wife Kate Garraway break down in tears.

Derek has been in hospital since the end of March last year after contracting Covid-19, and sadly he remains seriously ill.

The one-off programme ‘Finding Derek’ will document Derek’s battle and reveal how his illness has affected Kate, and their two children – Darcey, 14, and William, 11 – over the past year.

In a new trailer, released by ITV, Kate says: “Derek is the sickest person the team of doctors have treated that has lived.”

“Is he going to be able to come back? Or will he be alive but no longer the person he was? You shouldn’t have to think like that.”

The screen then goes black, and text appears on the screen, reading: “One year later, Derek is still in hospital.”

The Good Morning Britain presenter picked up a frame from a pile of items in her home, screaming: “Derek, I miss you!”

Speaking on Good Morning Britain on Thursday about the documentary, Kate said: “It is looking not just at what happened to my family, but also to to other families and the very long tale that Covid has.”

“Obviously Derek is an extreme example, we don’t want to scare people with what he has been through. But there are many other people who have got versions of it, and still not enough is known about the impact of long Covid.”

“We tend to think of long-term breathing problems, fatigue, anxiety, post-traumatic stress syndrome – but it is much more widespread than that. It is very emotional.”

Kate Garraway: Finding Derek airs at 9pm on Tuesday on ITV.
