Netflix renews controversial Squid Game: The Challenge series despite backlash from contestants

Netflix has renewed controversial series, Squid Game: The Challenge, despite the ongoing backlash from previous contestants.

The first season’s final episode will stream live tonight at 9pm, with the winner set to win a whopping $4.56million.

The spin-off show is based on the thrilling Korean series, and includes many of the same challenges – minus the possibility of death that was in the original.

Some of the games featured on both the original and the spin-off include: Red Light, Green Light, Honeycombs and Hopscotch.

Over 456 contestants took part in this year’s competition, making it one of the biggest reality shows ever.

Recruitment has already begun for season two, as it has been confirmed it will be returning to our screens.

Netflix Vice President of Nonfiction series, Brandon Riegg, said:”We’re so excited to continue the franchise of Squid Game with our team in Korea, and producers at Studio Lambert and The Garden for this epic competition series.”

“There was no red light in our decision to greenlight season two of Squid Game: The Challenge, the most ambitious show we’ve premiered at Netflix.”

The news comes after contestants on this years series condemned Netflix for the treatment they endured at London’s Wharf Studios.

Donegal influencer Eric Roberts has shared his negative experience on the show, and how they “didn’t see daylight at times for 48, 72 hours.”

Speaking on Ireland AM, the 32-year-old claimed they endured “constant mind games” and were “sleep deprived”.

He also alleged they were “starved”, and were fed “plain rice” during their time on the show.

Express Solicitors have said two of its clients who were on the show “suffered injuries such as hypothermia and nerve damage… after being stuck in painful stress positions for hours in freezing temperatures.”

The firm has said the alleged injuries occurred when contestants “had to stay motionless for hours in cold temperatures while filming”.

In response to the backlash from contestants, Netflix and the show’s producers Studio Lambert and The Garden said that “while it was very cold on set — and participants were prepared for that — any claims of serious injury are untrue.”

“We care deeply about the health and safety of our cast and crew, and invested in all the appropriate safety procedures,” they added.
