Laurence Kinlan hints Love/Hate won't EVER be back – as Nidge's death 'could easily be an end episode'

Love/Hate star Laurence Kinlan has hinted that season six of the show won’t happen in 2016 – and it will choose to end for good.

TV bosses announced over the weekend that Love/Hate will definitely take a break in 2015, with it tipped to focus on Patrick’s life if it does return.

The RTE actor – who plays Elmo – said last week’s finale “could easily be an end episode” and “would be the right time to go out”.

He said: “Last week’s episode was just incredible, and looking back on it, it could easily be an end episode. There’s so many things that he tied up.

“So if he didn’t go on – I’d be quite happy about that too because I think it was just an unbelievable way to go out, and the viewing figures were incredible.

“There’s too many shows that have just gone on and not maintained that high level that its given audiences over the years and I think it would be the right time to go out if it did.”

But Laurence, 31, admits he has “mixed emotions” on no new season coming next year – but does feel creator Stuart Carolan needs time to think whether to actually go on.

“I have so many mixed emotions on it. Stuart wrote last year, he wrote six episodes last year and the idea was going to be told over 12 episodes – which was last year and this year,” he told Newstalk’s Pat Kenny Show.

“And for him for maintain that, it just needs a longer period of time for him to sit down and see what he wants to do. People just think you go into a room and it’s done. It’s just not as easy.

“This is one man, sitting on his own in a room, coming up with these incredible storylines. So if he does go on and decide to do another one – great.

“But he is going to need the time to think about that. And if he doesn’t, it’s been an unbelievable rollercoaster, an amazing one”

Meanwhile Laurence admits that he has been so lucky at how his life has changed over the five years with the show.

“It’s completely changed all our lives over five years. It’s amazing to think back that, certainly going into the first read through, we just never knew what it would go on and do,” he said.

“And since then it’s been an incredible rollercoaster and it’s amazing that the whole country has got behind it and I’ve loved every minute of it.”

Digging in: Laurence feels lucky at screen time he’s got | RTE

And Laurence just feels happy that Elmo hasn’t been killed off yet.

“There’s not too many of us left. I’ve been really lucky that I’ve had some really good storylines over the five years,” he added.

“And it’s hard because there’s so many characters there. So to get any sort of screen time is tough. And it’s hard for Stuart to have all those ideas for so many different characters.”

But Laurence says it can be hard to go home and switch off after filming some of the particularly intense scenes.

“It can be. It completely depends on the scenes you’re doing that day. And we’ve all known each other for so long now, the actors and the crew,” he said.

“So we’re able to switch off fairly quickly depending on the scenes you’re doing that day. There are some scenes you’re doing which it is hard to switch off right away. But you do.

“I’ve been doing this 17 years, I know when to switch off and leave work where it should be – which is at work.”
