Britain’s Got Talent respond to allegations Nick Edwards’ audition was ‘staged’

Britain’s Got Talent have responded to allegations Nick Edwards’ audition was “staged”.

On Saturday night’s show, Nick was sitting in the audience when his two young daughters surprised him by walking out on stage with his mum.

Savannah and Cali, three and four, explained that they actually wanted their father to audition and that his mum had secretly filled out an application form on his behalf to encourage him to show off his singing skills to the judges.

Nick, who appeared to be shocked, later took to the stage to sing an emotional rendition of ‘Daddy’s Little Girl’ by Ernie Halter.

While his audition left presenter Declan Donnolly and judges Amanda Holden and Alesha Dixon in tears, viewers at home took to Twitter to accuse BGT on staging the “surprise” audition.

One tweeted: “The guy just so happened to randomly have a microphone attached to his shirt … yeah this is totally not staged at all.”

Another wrote: “you had a microphone on, a lyric sheet and a guitar with you, it wasn’t a surprise audition you melt.”

Britain’s Got Talent have since offered an justification for the microphone, explaining that Nick was approached on arrival to be part of the ‘gogglebox’ audience who are all mic’d up to give their live reactions to the acts.

A spokesperson for the show told MailOnline: “We loved welcoming back our BGT viewers back last night after a year away. To report or allude to anything being staged or contrived regarding Nick’s audition would be false and incorrect.”

“Quite simply, when Nick entered the Palladium auditorium during BGT auditions, he was approached to be part of our ‘gogglebox’ audience and told he would be mic’d up so we could capture his reactions throughout the day as he sat in the audience.”

“He was totally unsuspecting. We did this so we could mic him up without him suspecting a thing.”
