78-year-old widow heading on her first date since the death of her husband on tonight’s Generation Dating

A new episode of Generation Dating airs on Virgin Media One tonight.

The heartwarming new dating show follows two perfect strangers, separated by a generation or two, who set out to find the other a date.

Tonight’s episode will see sisters Úna, 68, and Ellen, 78, team up with 25-year-old Cloud in the hopes of finding love again.

Cloud is a bubbly party girl from Drimnagh, who works as an administrator at the Coombe Hospital.

Úna has lived in England for the last 50 years, has two grown up children and has been divorced for 24 years.

Her older sister Ellen is a widow who spent 50 years married to her beloved husband, and is a loving mother of five children and grandmother to 11 grandchildren.

Speaking ahead of the show, Ellen said: “I was married for 50 years before my husband died. He’ll be nine years dead now in April.”

“I thought it would be exciting to go on a date, I’ve never been on a date before, not since I was married.”

“I didn’t know if I was ready for it or not, I’m a long time a widow, but I think I am ready now to go on a date. It was a little experience for me.”

When asked whether her date lived up to her expectations, Ellen laughed: “No, not really… Let’s just say there was no spark.”

The 78-year-old also spoke about her family’s reaction to her appearing on the dating show.

She said: “It was a bit of a shock to them, to be honest with you, my eldest son was not that pleased but the rest of them encouraged me, they said ‘go for it mam, you have nothing to lose.’”

Generation Dating will air Wednesdays at 9pm on Virgin Media One.
