The Irish react to Cillian Murphy’s Oscar win

Our very own Cillian Murphy took home the gong for Best Actor during the 96th annual Academy Awards on Sunday, March 10.

This was the Cork native’s first-ever nomination and win.

Cillian won critical acclaim for his role as Robert J. Oppenheimer in Christopher Nolan’s biopic about the nuclear physicist.

Fans across Ireland have now taken to social media to congratulate the 47-year-old as he made history as the first Irish-born man to win Best Actor.

Cillian received a special shout-out from President Michael D. Higgins, who wrote: “Congratulations to Cillian Murphy on his wonderful achievement in winning the Best Actor Oscar, which he so appropriately dedicated to the peacemakers everywhere.”

“Congratulations too to @ElementPictures on the success of Poor Things.”

Cillian recently swept awards season after winning Best Actor at the Golden Globes, SAG Awards and BAFTA’s.

The Peaky Blinders actor went up against Bradley Cooper, Colman Domingo, Paul Giamatti and Jeffrey Wright on Sunday night.

The others were nominated for their respective roles in Maestro, Rustin, The Holdovers and American Fiction.

Oppenheimer led the field in this year’s Academy Awards with 13 Oscar nominations and seven wins.

Cillian’s co-star Robert Downey Jr also took home the award for Best Supporting Actor.
