RTÉ refuse to explain why presenter was paid over €42k in allowances

RTÉ has refused to explain why one of their presenters was paid allowances of over €42,000 last year.

Amid the payments scandal, the state broadcaster released an anonymised list of their top 100 earners.

This list showed that some employees earned significant payments in addition to their wages.

One individual in a “presenting and non-management” role worth received €42,778 in allowances, on top of their basic pay of €158,366.

Another “presenting and non-management” worker received allowances worth €36,221 in addition to their €100,264 salary.

A former executive board member received an allowance of €31,711 on top of their €169,950 pay, and another was paid a €28,711 allowance plus €190,550 pay.

It is unclear if the payments include car allowances, which are capped at €25,000.

When asked what the highest allowance amounts were paid for, an RTÉ spokesperson told The Sunday World: “We cannot comment on two individual allowances which may identify those individuals.”

They also said that the broadcaster did not have an updated list of the pay of the top 100 earners, which would include a 3pc pay rise last January.

On July 5, it released the anonymised list of their top 100 earners – which revealed each individual on the list is paid more than €100,000 per annum.

The top earning list includes 84 staff members and 16 contractors. 59 of these hold management positions, 10 are members of the executive board, and 31 are presenters or not in management.

At the top of the earnings list are presenters, and the top three earners make €515,000, followed by €343,083 and €342,000.

At the time, RTÉ didn’t name the top 100, citing data protection concerns.

The broadcaster later made the decision not to publish their names amid criticism it’s trying to “hide” their identities.

RTÉ said it would be “inappropriate” to ask staff their permission to published their name and salary, claiming several staff members complained to its Data Protection Officer.
