Mrs Brown’s Boys star Rory Cowan is supporting Leo Varadkar to become our first gay Taoiseach.

However Rory admitted he didn’t know who Leo was when Alan Hughes rushed in with the news that the Fine Gael politician had come out.

He told the Irish Sun that long periods touring in Australia and the UK had left him oblivious.

He said: “We were preparing to do the panto in The Tivoli when Alan Hughes rushed in saying ‘Leo Varadkar has come out on the radio’.

“My response was ‘Who is Leo Varadkar? Is he an actor? Is he one of our friends?’ The name meant nothing to me. I’ve been out of Ireland so much.”

Meanwhile, Rory confirmed there will be a new full series of Mrs Brown’s Boys after the show won at the National Television Awards.

He said: “There will be six full episodes but we’re not sure if it’s going to be this year or next year. Brendan has been trying to finish them in Florida.”
