Liam Cunningham jokes he’ll be ‘back collecting the dole’ after Game of Thrones

The show will come to an end in 2019

Liam Cunningham has joked that he’ll be back collecting the dole once Game of Thrones comes to an end in 2019.

The Irish actor has played Ser Davos Seaworth on the hit HBO series for eight years, and admitted that he’s sad the show is coming to an end – and so is his accountant.

“My accountant is sad, I’ll tell you that, I’ll be back at Hatch 13, Gardiner Street now collecting me dole, now that it’s over,” he told the Irish Mirror.

“I am sad, but I always knew it had a beginning, a middle and an end, and the good thing about it is everybody’s who’s been involved their stock has gone up, we’ve had a great showcase for our various talents.”

“I think people are now eager to try new projects, if you think about it, it’s been part of people’s lives, the viewers for eight years”.

“If you look at the younger cast members like Maisie Williams (Arya Stark) and Sophie Turner (Sansa Stark) they came on board when they were 13 or 14 years old and they’re in their twenties now.

“It’s kind of weirder for them than it is for me that they’ve almost grown up with the show; it’s been a huge part of my life too.”

On what he’ll miss about the show, Liam said, “It’s going to sound really boring, but I’ve always tried to tell decent stories, some controversial, some entertaining and some funny, that’s my baseline.”

“Game of Thrones has been some of the best storytelling I’ve ever been involved in, in my life. That part of it I’ll really miss, just brilliant storytelling.”

The actor also gushed about Carlow actress Saoirse Ronan, who has been hotly tipped for an Oscar win this year after she nabbed the Best Actress award at the Golden Globes.

“I’d be very depressed if she didn’t get the Oscar, Hollywood idolises her, they absolutely love her. She’s a decent human being, she’s incredibly talented,” he sa

“I’ve known her for quite a long time, I even worked with her dad, he’s an actor. So I’ve watched her growing up and turn into this fantastic artist, I’m delighted for her.”

“I wish her the very best, I have my fingers crossed for her and I want her to bring the Oscar home to Dublin. I’d put a few quid on, I’d go to Paddy Power and put a few quid on her to win.”

“The Golden Globe thing is a fairly good indicator, it’s not always accurate because I think loads of people thought Spielberg’s new film The Post was going to clean up and it walked away with none, so none of this is predictable.

“It would be brilliant, you can never tell with these things but I really hope Saoirse does win.”

Liam also spoke about the recent movement against sexual harassment in Hollywood, and how he’s always been surrounded by strong women in his life.

“There’s been strong fantastic women here in Ireland all the time and I wouldn’t have a career if it weren’t for the strong women that are part of my team.

“Almost all of my team are women, my agent in London is a woman, my agent in America is a woman, my manager in LA is a lady too. I mean I better behave myself or I’d get the arse kicked off me.

“It just wouldn’t be interesting if the women weren’t there, it would be equally as boring if the men weren’t there.

“There’s a few misnomers here because most of the casting people on this planet are women, the most powerful ones anyway have been women.”
