Conversations With Friends director Lenny Abrahamson hints at Normal People crossover

BBC’s upcoming adaptation of Sally Rooney’s novel Conversations With Friends could feature some familiar faces.

The show’s co-director Lenny Abrahamson, who also directed Normal People, has hinted Paul Mescal and Daisy Edgar-Jones could make a cameo in the new series.

Speaking to Radio Times, Lenny described the show as a “cousin” to Normal People, and admitted there’s potential for a subtle crossover.

When asked if Connell and Marianne could appear in Conversations With Friends, the filmmaker said: “Yes, that’s perfect! And Connell could be some moping boy in the background, licking his pencil. Now we’re talking, that’s gold!”

The 12-part series will start filming in a few weeks, but it won’t be released until 2022.

Lenny said: “We start filming in five weeks and I’m not sure when it’s due to air. But we’ve described it as a kind of cousin to Normal People.”

“It’s still within that sort of… you can feel Sally’s writing obviously, and there are similarities in how I’ll approach this, although there are also differences. It’s also 12 half-hour episodes [like Normal People], so there is some kind of continuity.”

Conversations With Friends will follow college student Frances, as she navigates a series of relationships that force her to confront her own vulnerabilities for the first time.

Irish actress Alison Oliver has been cast as the book’s lead character Frances, which was announced by Element Pictures last month.

Alison will star alongside American actress Sasha Lane, who will play Bobbi; former Girls star Jemima Kirke, who will play Melissa; and British actor Joe Alwyn as Nick.
