Baz Ashmawy on his silver hair: ‘I look younger now than when I was drinking and smoking’

Baz Ashmawy has revealed that he feels younger than ever, despite having “completely silver” hair.

The 50 Ways To Kill Your Mammy star admitted that when his hair first started to change colour, he felt like he “looked about 100”.

However, the broadcaster has since decided to embrace his silver locks, and admitted that he looks younger now compared to his days smoking and drinking.

“People keep saying to me it suits me and thank God it does, I had no choice. I went grey very young and that’s just the way it goes,” he told the Irish Sunday Mirror.

“It does bother you at the start. I went through periods of dying it and I hated it. I just said to myself I couldn’t do it anymore. When you start going the peppered black and grey that’s fine, you can deal with that. But when I started going white I thought, ‘Jesus, I look about 100’.

“It’s funny though, even though I’m completely silver now I probably look younger than when I was smoking and drinking.

“It’s not something I really think about. I get a bit of a ribbing from the kids – any time I start to grow a beard my daughter tells me not to because I look like Santa Claus,” he explained.

The telly star, who returned to the airwaves with his new show That Baz Thing on RTE Radio One last week, has completely changed his lifestyle in recent years by ditching unhealthy habits for working out and maintaining a balanced diet.

“It’s easy for me to say this as a reflective 42-year-old with not a black hair on my head but this is what I’ve learned and I wish someone said it to me when I was 30.

“You come up to your 40s and think you’d dread it but I’m quite enjoying them, I’m in a good place. I think I was worse in my 30s but I’m very comfortable in myself now,” he said.

“I get a lot of people who ask what I do but I’m not a gym instructor or a personal trainer. It was kind of an awakening I had. The benefit I got from it was to stop
giving myself excuses not to do it.

“I think people have a bit of body dysmorphia these days from looking on Instagram and thinking they need to look like these people. It’s not about that, it’s about feeling good in your own skin and feeling happy.”

Changes: Baz explained why he’s happy to go without drinking alcohol | VIPIRELAND.COM

Baz also revealed that he hasn’t drank alcohol in over a year, and explained why he’s happy to go without it.

“I was doing a documentary on Islam and for the show I gave up drink and I felt great afterwards. I just never went back to it. I’m very happy with it.

“Saying that, I might go on a night out with the missus and decide I want to have a few glasses of wine or go on holiday with the lads and have a cocktail but as it happened I haven’t wanted to and it’s been over a year since I drank.

“I don’t need alcohol for confidence or to feel comfortable so I’m happy enough to go out without it. Saying that, when it gets to 12am or 1am when people start repeating stories and all that, I’ve had enough of the night then end up driving everyone home,” he added.

Baz’s comments come after he opened up about being arrested for drink driving for the first time on his radio show last week.
