Anne Doyle has responded to the controversy surrounding George Hook’s comments about rape.

The former RTÉ newsreader revealed that she “wasn’t surprised” by the backlash George has received, since he made the comments on his Newstalk radio show last Friday.

Speaking to Independent.ie, Anne said, “I wasn’t surprised in the slightest at the reaction.”

“I welcome the fact that he gave, it would appear, a very whole-hearted apology. What could anyone say about [the comments]? They’re beyond unfortunate,” she said.

According to reports, Newstalk have since launched an investigation, amid calls for George to be taken off air.

However, The Irish Times has reported that on Tuesday, management asked staff not to submit a letter of protest, because of the negative impact it would have on the ongoing process.

The letter was signed by up to 20 Newstalk employees, and said that “the longer George Hook remains on air, the more reputational damage this station will suffer: damage that will unfairly reflect on the hardworking and professional staff at Newstalk.”
