Aengus Mac Grainna: 'I was so overjoyed getting married… ten years ago it wouldn't have been possible'

RTE newsreader Aengus Mac Grianna has told of his joy at getting married – after never thinking it possible.

The Celebrity MasterChef star admits it was “quite emotional” in the run up to getting wed last Sunday to long-term partner Terry Gill.

And Aengus, who will be jetting to London to make it official in August, says part of the emotion came from his knowledge of how gay marriage wasn’t possible a decade ago.

“Ten years ago I never thought that [the wedding] would be possible. Now it is happening and it’s real and I’m extremely happy,” he said.

“During the week I was quite emotional. I didn’t think that I would be but I was. I’ve been very sure about what I’m doing and really wanting to do it. It’s the right thing for us.”

The TV journalist was walked down the aisle by Anne Doyle at the humanist ceremony in Ballymagarvey Village in Co Meath.

He tells the RTE Guide that she was “there for me at the major junctures in my life” after mum Julie died when he was just 11 after being diagnosed from cancer.

And Aengus revealed that the night before the wedding he made sure to visit his mum’s grave.

He said: “We brought flowers from the garden with us. [Our wedding day was] all about the living but thoughts about my mum have been on my mind more than I thought they would. I know that she will be there with us in spirit.”

And newly-wed husband Terry insisted that he had a say on every element of the wedding.

“I was a consultant on everything. Seriously though, it was 50-50 on who picked the songs and the readings,” he said.

“My mum’s reading was from a song by Emeli Sande called Read All About It, which I love. Mam also baked the cake, three different layers of chocolate biscuit cake and fruitcake and iced it.

“It was such an emotional week but now that the ceremony is over it’s all about enjoying ourselves.”
