David Walsh: 'I was worried Chris O'Dowd wouldn't portray me well in Lance Armstrong movie'

Chris O’Dowd portrays Irish journalist David Walsh in his latest movie – however the man himself was unsure whether or not the funny man could play a serious part.

The Roscommon native is best known for his roles in comedy hits like Bridesmaids and Moone Boy – however in The Program he portrays David trying to uncover cyclist Lance Armstrong’s doping scandal.

“I wondered about Chris when I first heard. I mean, I loved him in Bridesmaids. How can you not like that guy?,” David said.

“I thought, yeah, that was brilliant, Chris, but could you be a hard-edged journalist?”

Despite his initial reservations, the journalist was pleasantly surprised with Chris’s performance in the film.

“And then I remember seeing a scene in The Program [about an argument with other journalists]…and that’s exactly how I was,” he told RTE Ten.

The flick also stars Ben Armstrong as Lance who had to take performance enhancing drugs for the role.

Chris recently admitted he thought the actor had made the right decision in taking them.
