Taylor Swift references Ireland in sweet love song on new album Midnights

Taylor Swift has dropped her much-anticipated new album, Midnights,

The singer’s tenth studio album offers fans a rare insight into her relationship with her British actor boyfriend Joe Alwyn, and includes a sweet reference to Ireland.

The second last track on the album, Sweet Nothing, recalls a romantic holiday they took to Wicklow in July 2021.

The love song was co-written by Taylor and William Bowery, the pseudonym her boyfriend has used to pen songs on her previous albums.

In the lyrics, Taylor sings: “I spy with my little tired eye / Tiny as a firefly, a pebble / That we picked up last July / Down deep inside your pocket / We almost forgot it / Does it ever miss Wicklow sometimes?”

Taylor and Joe spent a lot of time in Ireland together last year, as the actor was filming the TV adaptation of Sally Rooney’s Conversations With Friends.

The couple have been together since 2016, but are notoriously private when it comes to their relationship.

The 32-year-old co-wrote most of her new album with her longtime collaborator Jack Antonoff.

In a post shared on Instagram, Taylor wrote: “Midnights is a wild ride of an album and I couldn’t be happier that my co pilot on this adventure was @jackantonoff.”

“He’s my friend for life (presumptuous I know but I stand by it) and we’ve been making music together for nearly a decade HOWEVER… this is our first album we’ve done with just the two of us as main collaborators.”

“We’d been toying with ideas and had written a few things we loved, but Midnights actually really coalesced and flowed out of us when our partners (both actors) did a film together in Panama.”

“Jack and I found ourselves back in New York, alone, recording every night, staying up late and exploring old memories and midnights past.”

“Midnights is a collage of intensity, highs and lows and ebbs and flows,” Taylor explained. “Life can be dark, starry, cloudy, terrifying, electrifying, hot, cold, romantic or lonely. Just like Midnights.”

Alongside releasing a new album, Taylor is currently in the process of re-recording her first six albums, after the master recordings were acquired by Scooter Braun.

The music executive acquired Big Machine Music Group, and subsequently the rights to the songstress’ first six albums, back in 2019.

Taylor has already re-recorded and released two of her albums, Fearless and Red, and labelled them “Taylor’s Version” in an attempt to regain control of her mastery.
