Shakira opens up about ‘rebuilding’ her life following split from ex Gerard Piqué

Shakira has opened up about “rebuilding” her life, after splitting from her ex Gerard Piqué.

The musician, 47, ended her relationship with the footballer, 37, back in 2022 after eleven years together.

The singer discussed having a career renaissance as she released her highly anticipated new album, Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran – her first record in seven years.

The singer said to The Times about the album: “[It’s] the transformation of pain into creativity, frustration into productivity, anger into passion, vulnerability into resilience.”

“There were so many pieces of my life that crumbled in front of my eyes and I had to rebuild myself in a way, picking up the bones from the floor and putting them all together. And the glue that kept it all together was music.”

She added: “It’s very feminine and beautiful, with a very interesting story that is an analogy to women’s empowerment.”

Gerard and Shakira

Shakira met Piqué on the set of the music video for her song Waka Waka (This Time for Africa) back in 2010, before they went public with their romance the following year.

The pair welcomed their son Milan in 2013, and their second Sasha in 2015.

The mother-of-two spoke candidly about her previous relationship, and said: “For a long time I put my career on hold, to be next to Gerard, so he could play football. There was a lot of sacrifice for love.”

Since their split, Gerard has moved on with 25-year-old model Clara Chia Marti.

Meanwhile, Shakira has been linked to F1 driver Lewis Hamilton in recent months.

They’ve been spotted hanging out on numerous occasions over the past year, and a source previously told People magazine: “They’re spending time together and in the ‘getting to know you’ stage. It’s fun and flirty.”
