Miley Cyrus “really fought” to make her marriage work, before splitting from her long-term love Liam Hemsworth.
Their breakup was reported for the first time over the weekend, but it’s believed the pair have been separated for several months.
A source has since told PEOPLE that Miley “really fought to make it work” with Liam, but sadly it didn’t work out.
The insider said: “She wanted to go to therapy. She just wants to be in a healthy and focused place.”
The 26-year-old singer and the 29-year-old actor first met back in 2009 on the set of The Last Song.
The pair dated on-and-off for years until Liam proposed in 2012, but sadly they broke up a year later.
But then in 2015, the couple reconciled, and went on to wed in in December 2018 – after they sadly lost their Malibu home in the devastating Woolsey fire.
PEOPLE’s source continued: “Miley took [the fire] a lot harder than Liam did, and he is the one who helped her get through it and realize everything would be okay.”
“She even said it all the time herself, that he was her ‘survival partner.’ She took their commitment to marriage seriously and was so excited about being married once she realized it’s what she wanted.”
The news comes after Miley was allegedly spotted kissing Brody Jenner’s ex Kaitlynn Carter in Italy over the weekend.
