Johnny Depp says domestic abuse allegations made against him by Amber Heard cost him ‘everything’

Johnny Depp was back on the stand Wednesday to continue his testimony in his defamation trial against Amber Heard.

The actor launched a lawsuit against his ex-wife in 2019, after she wrote about being an alleged victim of domestic violence in an op-ed for the Washington Post in December 2018.

While Johnny’s name was excluded from the piece, his legal team have argued that the op-ed implied that he “perpetrated domestic violence against her.”

The former couple are currently squaring off at the Fairfax County Courthouse in Virginia.

On Wednesday, Johnny was asked by one of his lawyers what Amber’s domestic abuse allegations had cost him.

He replied: “Nothing less than everything. When the allegations were rapidly circling the globe, telling people that I was a drunken cocaine-fuelled menace who beat women – suddenly in my 50s – it’s over.”

“I lost then, no matter the outcome of this trial.”

The 58-year-old said that a “couple of days” after the Post column was published, Disney announced he would no longer appear as Captain Jack Sparrow in the blockbuster Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.

Johnny denied ever striking Amber and claimed she was the one who was abusive, saying she would “verbally decimate me” with a “rapid-fire, endless parade of insults”.

The Oscar-nominated actor, who was married to Amber from 2015 to 2017, said he would often retreat to another room to escape her rage.

He said: “I would just go and lock myself in the bathroom. If I stayed to argue, eventually I was sure that it was going to escalate into violence. In her rage and her anger she would strike out.”

Johnny claimed: “She would begin with a slap. It could begin with a shove. It could begin, you know, with throwing a TV remote at my head. It could be throwing a glass of wine in my face.”

He also told the court that his ex-wife once threw a vodka bottle at him, severing the tip of one of his fingers.

“I was looking directly at my bones sticking out,” the actor said as he showed off his crooked finger.

The Charlie and the Chocolate Factory star said he was in “shock” and “started to write in my own blood on the walls” – “lies that she told me” and “little reminders of my past.”

Johnny also recalled a now-infamous incident between him and his former wife, in which he found “human fecal matter” on his side of the bed in the flat he shared with Amber.

“It was so bizarre and so grotesque, that I could only laugh,” he said.

Amber has denied that she or any of her friends left human excrement on the bed, testifying in Johnny’s 2018 defamation trial in the UK that the idea was “absolutely disgusting”.

Several high profile witnesses, including Elon Musk, James Franco and Paul Bettany, are to appear later in the trial, which is expected to last at least another month.
