Cristiano Ronaldo’s family thank Liverpool football fans for emotional serenade after the death of his son

Cristiano Ronaldo’s family say they “will never forget” the emotional display put on by Liverpool fans following the passing of his baby son.

The Manchester United star and his girlfriend Georgina Rodriguez announced the death of their newborn on Monday evening, as well as the birth of his twin sister.

At the Liverpool vs Manchester United match on Tuesday, Liverpool fans clapped and sang ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ in the seventh minute of the match in reference to Cristiano’s no. 7 jersey.

Cristiano’s sister Elma shared her gratitude for the gesture on social media, writing: “Thank you for this Liverpool. We will never forget what you did today.”

His other sister Katia also shared the video of the serenade, and wrpte: “Way beyond football.”

The idea for the tribute came from a Liverpool fan account on Facebook that suggested holding a minute’s applause for Cristiano and his family ahead of the game.

The post said: “If you are lucky enough to be attending the game, please show a mark of respect to Ronaldo and his family by taking part in the round of applause which will be held in the seventh minute.”

“Rivalries should be set aside in heartbreaking circumstances such as these. You’ll Never Walk Alone, CR7 Jr.”

Cristiano and his girlfriend announced their baby boy had passed away in a heartbreaking statement shared on social media.

They wrote: “It is with our deepest sadness that we have to announce that our baby boy has passed away. It is the greatest pain that any parent can feel.”

“Only the birth of our baby girl gives us the strength to live this moment with some hope and happiness. We would like to thank the doctors and nurses for all their expert care and support.”

“We are all devastated at this loss and we kindly ask for privacy at this very difficult time. Our baby boy, you are our angel. We will always love you.”
