Cristiano Ronaldo formally accused of €14million tax fraud

Cristiano Ronaldo has been accused of tax fraud worth 14.7 million euro.

According to The Independent, the Real Madrid player has apparently accumulated a sum of 14.7 million in unpaid taxes.

The footballer has been charged with defrauding the Spanish tax office.

Ronaldo allegedly took advantage of what is known as ‘the Beckham law’ – which allows foreign sportspersons to pay 24.75% income tax, rather than the 48% applied to Spanish nationals. However, athletes must still pay taxes on other income earned in Spain.

The footballer is accused of having diverted some €150m of advertising revenue through the British Virgin Islands.

The regional state prosecutor of Madrid has accused Ronaldo of four accounts of tax fraud. The accounts range from 2011-2014.

The paper reports that the Portuguese sport star took advantage of a “business structure” created in 2010 to hide from fiscal authorities income generated in Spain from image rights.

Ronaldo’s agency had previously said he was up to date on his taxes.

The news comes just days after it was reported that the footballer has welcomed twins via surrogate.
