Pat Kenny admits: 'Ray might be too old to host The Late Late'

Pat Kenny has dismissed Ray D’Arcy’s chances of hosting the Late Late Show – admitting he’s too old to host.

The TV presenter reckons RTE will be after someone newer and younger for the chat show when Ryan Tubridy decides to hang up his boots.

“I don’t think Ryan Tubridy is going anywhere soon but if Ray is eight years older than Ryan, and Ryan does another six years, they [RTE] might be looking for someone a bit younger than Ray to take over in six years time,” he said.

TV: Pat reckons Ray might be too old to host The Late Late

Meanwhile, Pat divulged that he was shocked that RTE decided to axe Brendan O’Connor’s Saturday Night Show in favour of a new chat show fronted by Ray.

“I have no idea why RTE did that. I thought Brendan was iconoclastic and cheeky. He had been doing better and better, people who hated him at the start were beginning to like him,” he told The Irish Sun.

The former Late Late Show host also reckons that Ray will not be returning to morning radio anytime soon to take over the vacant slot left by John Murray.

Shock: Pat was surprised that Brendan’s show was axed

“I don’t think it will be Ray, because that hour-long show is too short for his ambitions in that direction,” he said.

“And to give him longer, would mean shifting Sean O’Rourke, and I don’t think they would do that.”

Pat revealed that he is very happy with the direction his own show In The Round on UTV Ireland has done.

“Content wise we did very well. I would have watched them all myself [as a viewer].”

“Obviously numbers wise we could have done better. But by the end it was really picking up speed. Television is a bit of a habit.”
