Brooklyn nabs top honour at British Film Awards

Irish film Brooklyn nabbed the top honour at the 2016 Evening Standard British Film Awards last night.

The film, starring Saoirse Ronan as the lead, was named Best Film – beating stiff competition as it was up against Colin Farrell’s The Lobster, High-Rise and 45 Years.

The John Crowley directed film has seen huge success this awards season as it has been nominated for Best British Film at this years BAFTAs, with Saoirse also nominated for Best Actress at the BAFTAs and the Oscars for her lead role in the film.

The news comes as Brooklyn is set for a small screen spin-off, based around the boarding house where Saoirse’s character Eilis lived.

Other Irish people honoured at the British Film Awards included Dublin writer Emma Donoghue in  the Best Screenplay category for her film-adaptation of her novel Room.

Brooklyn joins Room, directed by Irish director Lenny Abrahamson, is nominated for four Oscars including Best Film.
