Going for gold! Saoirse Ronan and Michael Fassbender nominated for Best Lead at Oscars

Saoirse Ronan and Michael Fassbender have both been nominated for an Oscar.

The stars have been given the acknowledgement by the academy for their individual roles in Brooklyn and Steve Jobs.

Carlow beauty Saoirse had created much Oscar buzz around her performance in John Crowley’s Brooklyn and had already been nominated for a Golden Globe and SAG award.

Although sadly missing out on the Best Actress honour at the Golden Globes to Brie Larson, this is no doubt a sweetener for the starlet who has been recognised for the Best Actress at the awards.

This is the second nomination for the 21-year-old, who was previously given the honour at the tender age of 13 for her role in Atonement.

Meanwhile, Michael has been recognised by the academy with his second nomination.

Previously acknowledged with the Best Supporting Actor nom in 12 Years a Slave, the Kerry man this time round takes the Best Actor for his turn as Steve Jobs.

Sadly, the IFTA winner also missed out on a Golden Globe last week to Leonardo DiCaprio.
