Exclusive! Lenny Abrahamson: 'It's hard not to feel Oscar nomination pressure'

With Oscar nominations out this Thursday, Irish filmmaker Lenny Abrahamson has revealed he is feeling the pressure.

Speaking to Goss.ie. at the premiere of his new film Room, the famed director admitted he would be delighted if the flick got acknowledged by the Academy – especially the movie’s lead, Brie Larson.

“It’s hard not to. You’re secretly that close that you think ‘well now that we’re here wouldn’t it be nice?'” he said.

“I think if we get any nominations for the film, it’ll be such a massive victory for small film in that circumstance.

“I’d be very disappointed if Brie [Larson, lead actress in Room] didn’t get nominated – after that everything’s a bonus,” he added.

“I may personally shed a tear but I’ll come out smiling.”

Opening up about whether he’ll watch the nominations live, the 49-year-old insisted he won’t be waiting on the announcement with bated breath.

“I don’t know. I probably won’t. I’ll probably just check my emails after an hour or two and see what happens, go for a walk,” he smiled.

Aside from being an incredible year for the movie-maker, the What Richard Did director did give his opinion on other Irish hopefuls vying for an Oscar nod.

“I think she’s [Saoirse Ronan] got a great chance, people really love her. I think Michael [Fassbender] will be nominated,” he told Goss.ie.

“I think Brooklyn has got lots of chances in lots of categories but already it’s been very exciting.”
