Q. I’m 35 and my hair has started to thin out considerably over the past few months. My GP has taken bloods and said it’s not hormonal and put it down to stress. I’m very conscious about it, and was wondering if there is anything you can recommend.

Over the past number of years thinning hair in women has become quite common so you are certainly not alone.

You may have heard of the ‘vampire facelift’ a skin treatment that uses your own blood to rejuvenate the skin, but it’s less commonly known that this treatment is also highly effective in treating hair loss.

What does the treatment involve?

Platelet Rich Plasma Treatment also known as PRP, involves extracting a small portion of a patient’s blood from their arm and spinning it in a centrifuge to separate the plasma – the fluid part – from the red and white blood cells.

The concentrated plasma rich in platelets and growth factors is then injected into the scalp to stimulate the activity of the hair follicles and promote new hair growth. Hair follicles survive on the nutrition they get from blood supply so if we introduce platelets by administering platelet rich plasma in the area of damaged hair follicles, it amplifies the body’s naturally occurring wound healing mechanism.

It’s a very effective treatment for hair loss and from a research point of view there are also a number of scientifically based articles showing its effectiveness in increasing hair count, hair thickness and the growth phase of the hair cycle. Most clients’ benefit from a course of treatments and can combine with other treatments such as RioBlush Carboxytherapy and Mesotherapy for increased results.

An alternative option is Mesotherapy treatment, which involves injecting a combination of minerals, vitamins, amino acids, nucleic acids and co-enzymes into the scalp to stimulate hair follicles and increase circulation to the area.

If you not into the idea of injecting your own blood or synthetic materials then homecare topical products can also be used alone or while having treatments. One of the best-known products available for both men and women is REGAINE. REGAIN products contain the active ingredient minoxidil, the only over-the-counter treatment clinically proven to help prevent further hair loss which works by helping the blood flow to the hair follicles and increasing follicular size and hair shaft diameter, stimulating and prolonging hair growth.

And lastly you must consider your diet. If you’re not getting enough vitamins and minerals in your daily diet then I would recommend supplements such as the Advanced Nutrition Program Skin Vitality 2 for skin, hair and nails. The combination includes vitamins A & C, riboflavin and zinc for skin, selenium and biotin for hair, along with selenium and zinc for nails.
