SinĂ©ad Desmond quits TV3 over ‘gender pay row’

Sinead Desmond has quit TV3, after a row over the gender pay gap.

The Ireland AM host is believed to have been earning much less then her male co-hosts Mark Cagney and Alan Hughes, and went to station bosses to air her grievances.

According to The Irish Mail On Sunday, Sinéad went to management about getting a wage increase, but she was told no.

“She went into them and said she was disgusted at the difference. But they said ‘no’,” a source said.

“They have called her bluff.”

Sinead hadn’t been on the show since August, around the same time the gender pay gap issue was raised in RTE, when Sharon NĂ BheolĂ¡in if the Six One News spoke out about being paid less than Bryan Dobson.

A TV3 representative confirmed the news in a statement:

“SinĂ©ad Desmond has decided to leave Ireland AM after 11 years working on the show. We would like to thank SinĂ©ad and wish her well for the future.”

While sources have said the presenter left over the gender pay gap, TV3 sources have said there are many reasons for different salaries.

Including length of time at the station, with Mark being there for 17 years, and Alan for 15.
