Room To Improve star dies in ‘tragic accident’

One of the most popular stars from Room To Improve has passed away.

Michael Stokes, 15, became a breakaway star of the RTE series, when Dermot Bannon came to the Malahide home of Ann Higgins, a special needs teacher, and her husband Barry to make it more wheelchair-friendly.

Michael stole the hearts of the nation and later featured on the Late Late Show where he chatted to Ryan Tubridy.

The teenager was wheelchair bound, and had a great attitude, at one point during the show telling Dermot to “go back to the drawing board”.

While it wasn’t made clear why, Michael revealed on the Late Late Show that he was then fostered by Ann and Barry full time.

“I knew Ann because she was my teacher and I met Barry at my communion party,” he said.

“I have my own bed, I have my own desk. I love everything, everything is at my level,” he revealed.

According to RIP.ie, Michael passed away peacefully on Saturday “in the wonderful care of the staff of Temple Street Children’s Hospital”.

“He will be very sadly missed by his parents, brothers, sisters, extended family and a large circle of friends,” it adds. The notice said the young man had “a tragic accident”.

According to reports Michael suffered a fall a number of weeks ago. His funeral will take place on Wednesday at Church of the Sacred Hearth, Seabury, Malahide.
