President Michael D Higgins and Martin Scorsese have struck up quite a bromance

President Michael D Higgins and Martin Scorsese struck up quite a bromance yesterday in Dublin.

The President of Ireland had the legendary director in stitches yesterday afternoon, as he presented the Hollywood legend with the John Ford Award at a special Irish Film and Television Academy event.

According to the Sunday Independent, after stepping up onto an extra-large wooden block in front of the podium, Michael made a hilariously self-deprecating joke about his height – which left Martin in the fits of laughter on stage.

“Wasn’t it Wellington who said long legs are only useful in retreat?” the President quipped.

At the podium, Michael D gave an extraordinary speech as he honoured Martin for his “unique contribution” to film.

“How timely it is to be reminded that, what art makes possible is the emancipation of our sensibilities from any acceptance of the inevitability of a weary indifference to the suffering of the world.

“For his gaze that has never been averted, it is right that Martin Scorsese be honoured,” he said.

When Martin took to the podium, he was filled with emotion as he said, “I never thought that I would be receiving something like this. It’s from another time and place for me.”
