Oliver Callan 'came close to ruin' from dark depression until he found love

Comedian Oliver Callan has finding a boyfriend rescued him from the “darkest period” in his life – after falling into a deep depression.

The RTE star admitted John – who he has been going out with for two years – was the only saving grace during a period where he “came close to my ruin”.

Now he feels that his new series, Callan’s Kicks, is his “comeback” after being so emotionally hit.

“When I met [John], he prised me away from the abyss. It’s still a raw memory but I’ve never been so happy and I’ve accepted that egregious things happen in life,” Oliver said.

“You cannot let the darkness dictate the period after the escape. This TV series is both my launch and my comeback. I have recovered so rapidly from something with came close to my ruin.”

Helped: Oliver’s boyfriend John saved him

He had been suffering from a deep depression, which was only helped when John and his family convinced him to see a psychologist for therapy.

“I felt I was to blame for everything that befell me. I was isolated from family and friends and there was no hope of a relationship,” he told the Sunday Independent.

“Until meeting John, that misery was going to be my life and I fell into a deep depression.”

Now Oliver, who met his first boyfriend in Charlie’s Chinese restaurant, is hoping to take their relationship to the next step.

But they are “still thinking about” moving in together because John “doesn’t want to be in the media because of me”.

However Oliver – who came out publicly on the Saturday Night Show – added they since meeting they “have been seeing each other as much as we possibly can”.

“And he gets on great with the family up in Monaghan, which I presume is very exotic to him, and I get on very well with his family. Which is very rare in gay life, unfortunately,” he said.
