Miriam O’Callaghan insists she’s on TV because she ‘didn’t look like the back of a bus’

Miriam O’Callaghan has insisted that she never wanted to be on television, but was thrust in front of the camera because she “didn’t look like the back of a bus”.

The 56-year-old, who hosts RTÉ’s Prime Time, worked as a producer in the UK before becoming a TV presenter.

“I became a researcher on British television, I became a producer and then, because I didn’t look like the back of a bus, someone said I should go on telly,” she told the Herald.

“I never wanted to go on telly but I was put on it. It worked for me. I was a law student, who would have said I would be the presenter of a current affairs programme? It didn’t work like that,” she said.

The RTÉ star says that she works extremely hard, but sometimes it’s just about being in the right place at the right time.

“I think I’ve been very lucky but then a part of me would also say you make your own luck.

“My mother would say I’m unbelievably hard-working. If you work hard and you do a lot, you make our own luck. You can just be in the right place at the right time,” she added.
