Rylan Clark has revealed he was hospitalised after splitting from his husband Dan Neal.
The 33-year-old confirmed his split from Dan in June last year, after six years of marriage.
The former X Factor star, who previously said he was “mentally unwell” after his marriage broke down, has since revealed he spent time in hospital last summer “for his safety”.
Speaking to The Guardian, Rylan said: “I didn’t think I’d be here. I didn’t think I could continue [to work or to live]. I didn’t think I’d actually come back. I was very… gone.”
“I’m the last person that my friends would ever believe could feel as low as I did. Superficially, on paper, I can look after myself, but actually in that moment and for months after, none of the money or the fame mattered. I did not know myself at certain points.”
“I was having thoughts and doing things that made me… f**ked up, for want of a better word. I didn’t understand why I was doing that to myself. So, I went away for a bit [to the hospital]. For safety reasons.”
Rylan continued: “It’s really strange talking about this, because I’ve not even spoken about it to my friends. I just never thought I could get that ill.”
“Strange situations do very strange things to people. If it wasn’t for my mum, and my family and close friends I genuinely have no idea if I’d be here.”
“I learned I’m worth something. That I should be proud of myself, not embarrassed of Rylan. I should be proud that I can build my mum a house. I should be proud that I can employ my family. I learned that.”
Rylan and Dan met back in 2013, and tied the knot two years later.
Announcing their split, Rylan told The Sun last summer: “I have made a number of mistakes which I deeply regret and have inevitably led to the breakdown of our marriage.”
“I have taken time away from work as I am not in a good place at the moment and am seeking help. I am trying to take each day at a time and would like to thank you to everyone for their support and for respecting our privacy at this time.”
