Piers Morgan defends controversial interview with ‘real-life’ Martha from Baby Reindeer

Piers Morgan has spoken out for the first time following his tell-all interview with the “real-life” Martha from Baby Reindeer, Fiona Harvey.

In a tell-all interview on Piers Morgan Uncensored, the alleged stalker attempted to “set the record straight” on claims she stalked Richard Gadd, the creator and star of the hit Netflix series.

Piers has since said he believes she “lied” during the interview, but questioned whether she is really a “convicted stalker”.

During the bombshell interview, Fiona revealed her plans to take legal action against Netflix.

The alleged stalker is set to sue the streaming platform and the show’s creator Richard Gadd over the depiction, which she has claimed is “defamatory.”

The woman said that she had been forced into telling her side of the story following the death threats she received following the release of the show.

During the interview, she also repeatedly denied stalking Richard in real life, and described the show as “a work of fiction, a work of hyperbole.”

Speaking on ITV’s Lorraine today, Piers admitted that although he believes Fiona was lying at points, he hasn’t seen any proof that she’s been convicted of stalking – as the show claimed with the character Martha.

The TV presenter also suggested Netflix claiming that the show “is a true story” could be problematic.

He told Lorraine: “She has a right to have her say and was happy to come on the show, I tried to be very fair and balanced and tried to get to the truth.

“I think she lied in the interview but is she a convicted stalker?”

He continued: “The key point is, if she isn’t, then the Netflix claim at the start of every episode saying ‘this is a true story’ becomes problematic.”

“Have they defamed her? If you accuse someone of being a convicted stalker and they are not, that is a pretty serious claim to make.”

“I think they’ve got problems here because she clearly is determined to have her day in court with Netflix.”

The 59-year-old added: “The key question is, after watching the series and my interview, is it actually a true story?”

“Did she go to prison, is she a convicted stalker?”

“As I sit here Lorraine so far, there is no actual evidence that she has ever been in court – so we have to wait and see.”

He continued to criticise how easy it was for people to track down messages online, saying: “Internet sleuths typed parts of messages into her Twitter account and came up with the same phraseology.

“I think they [Netflix] failed in their duty of care to Fiona.”

Pier’s interview with the “real-life” Martha from Baby Reindeer was branded “irresponsible” by viewers after its release.

Those watching the interview were shocked and “disturbed” as they branded it a “painful watch.”

Viewers were less than impressed by the interview, and many took to social media to express their concerns.

They branded it irresponsible, disturbing, and maintained that it was exploitative as they criticised Piers himself.

The limited series, starring Richard Gadd and Jessica Ganning, depicts the real-life story of the actor’s experience with a female stalker – who has since been identified as Fiona.

In the series, the comedian’s character Donny offers Martha, played by Jessica Ganning, a drink while at the bar he works at, unknowingly starting the nightmarish situation.

At first, she appears to be friendly, but her behaviour slowly becomes obsessive as she begins to stalk Donny both online and in real life.

Over the span of four and a half years, Richard revealed that he received 41,071 emails, 744 tweets, letters totalling 106 pages and 350 hours of voicemail messages from the older woman [Martha in the show].

The creator of the series, who spoke from personal experience, disguised the identity of his stalker in the show, changing her name to Martha.

But last month, Fiona broke her silence for the first time following the release of the show, and claimed she was “the victim”.
