Love Island’s Hugo Hammond explains his awkward ‘tragic’ comment

Hugo Hammond has explained the “tragic” comment he made in his awkward Love Island exit interview.

The PE teacher was dumped from the show last week alongside Amy Day, who he has been pursuing a romance with since Casa Amor.

As they left the villa together, Hugo said: “I’m not going to lie my Love Island journey has been tragic.”

Amy was clearly unimpressed by his statement, as her eyes visibly widened in shock.

Hugo addressed the “tragic” comment during his appearance on Wednesday’s Lorraine, insisting: “That was more of a reflection of my journey in there.”

“Obviously I’d been there for so long. I’d tried it with quite a few girls and then some bombshells came in for me and didn’t work out.”

“So that wasn’t a reflection of Ames herself but more a reflection of me and my journey, and what I’d been through in there.”

Hugo also discussed the multiple friendship couples he made in the villa, after rejecting Sharon Gaffka, AJ Bunker and Georgia Townend.

He said: “I think potentially I didn’t really want to compromise for love. I‘ve got a type and I know what I’m looking for and I wouldn’t say I was picky, but I just didn’t get that spark that a lot of the other boys were looking for with their girls.”

“I asked them after one or two chats was it something you could see long term, and I just unfortunately didn’t get that feeling.”

It comes after Hugo admitted he would love to “get to know” new Love Island bombshell Priya Gopaldas when she leaves the show.

The medical student, who is currently coupled up with Brett Staniland, entered the villa after Hugo was dumped.

Hugo said: “he looks like a great girl and I would have loved to have got to know her. But unfortunately, I’ll have to wait a couple of weeks to do that.

Love Island continues tonight at 9pm on Virgin Media One and Virgin Media Player.
