Sharon Corr insists she’s ‘one of the happiest divorced women on the planet’ after marriage split

Sharon Corr has admitted she’s “one of the happiest divorced women on the planet”, following her shock split from her husband Gavin Bonnar.

The Corrs singer split from her longterm partner in 2019, after 18 years of marriage.

Speaking to Miriam O’Callaghan on her RTÉ Radio 1 show on Sunday, the 54-year-old said she “learned so much from the storm” of her marriage split.

Sharon explained: “I have learned so much from the storm of that and I am extremely grateful. It really really pushed lessons in front of me that if I didn’t learn I would either stay on this safe fence or I would get off and do something about it.

“And I got off and I did something about it. I have taken my music career to different dimensions.”

Sharon’s ex-husband famously moved on with Telma Ortiz, the sister of the Queen of Spain Letizia Ortiz, and the couple welcomed their first child together in October 2021.

Addressing the media attention surrounding their breakup, the singer continued: “I guess lot of my stuff was reported on quite heavily in the newspapers via the other people involved because I never had my private life in the newspapers.

“It became news via the fact of who my ex had gotten involved with.”

The 54-year-old, who lives in Madrid with her son Cathal, 18, and daughter Flori, 16, said she’s embracing single life – and is unsure if she’ll ever marry again.

“As a woman, I love being single and I am probably one of the happiest divorced women on the planet. It is coming up on five years now and I am delighted I did it.”

“My best friend Des McMahon would say to me, ‘Sharon, never say never don’t close the door’. I get that,” Sharon continued.

“It is such a hard journey and I say to myself, ‘Why would I ever do that to myself again’. I think if I wanted to be with somebody for the idea of what is ‘forever’ I wouldn’t get married, I would do something with friends to commit each other.

“I am starting to get the heebie geebies and my stomach is starting to turn at the idea.”

“I have changed my opinions on so many things and it is really important to be open to things. The things you should do are the things you fear,” she added.
