RTÉ’s Caitriona Perry admits the late Keelin Shanley knew she was sick before joining Six One news

RTÉ news reader Caitriona Perry has admitted that her late co-host Keelin Shanley knew she was sick before joining Six One news.

The TV presenter has admitted that both she and Keelin’s boss were the only ones who knew her “secret”.

“She was sick before she took on the Six One, but the only people who knew were me and our boss,” she told the Sunday Independent’s Life magazine.

“So she and I were carrying that secret, and you have to have massive respect for someone who does what we do.”

Caitriona also pointed out that while many viewers sit at home and judge what they wear or how they act, people never stop to think about what’s going on behind the scenes.

“Everyone sits at home and judges what you’re wearing or how you come across and they don’t know what is going on with you and your life.

“We carried each other’s secrets for a long time,” she explained.

Speaking about her passing, Caitriona said she spoke to Keelin just hours before she died, after a battle with cancer.

“I spoke to her the day before she died. She died on election day which was a Saturday, and the [previous] Tuesday night was the leader’s debate.

“All of the political nuts in the country were watching the debate, as was Keelin.”

Keelin passed away in February 2020

“I was in touch her into the wee hours of the morning and we were discussing who came off well and who didn’t,” she added.
